Pretending

Documentary > 55 mins > HD > In Development

A film about friendship, fantasy, betrayal, and the failings of the judicial system.

Pretending-artwork In April 1997 Jamie Koeleman, a gay man, told to his best friend a story that he alleged actually took place – a story about how he murdered a man whilst getting a blow job. His best friend was so disturbed by this extreme scenario that he told the police. A month later, Jamie Koeleman was arrested for the unsolved murder of Francis Arnoldt, committed in 1991. After three trials and two appeals, Koeleman is now serving nineteen years in prison for murder. Did Jamie Koeleman really kill Francis Arnoldt? Or was he just pretending?

Pretending is a film about the Australian judicial system and homophobia, sexual fantasy, and the boundaries of friendship.
